What are the different types of hash?

There are many different types of hash. The differences are mainly visible in the texture, malleability, and colour of the hash. They are often named after the method of extraction used to create the hash.

What is hash?

Hash, or hashish, is made from the resin which is secreted from the cannabis plant. It is dried and pressed into small blocks and smoked or eaten. The resin is rich in THC, which is the main psychoactive component of cannabis, and the main mind altering ingredient. Hash comes in a variety of colours and textures depending on the type.

The word hash is the shorthand form of hashish, which in Arabic means “grass.” The word in Arabic is misleading since hash is not made from plant matter, but from resin. To get hash from cannabis plant, cultivators separate glandular hairs called trichomes and compress them into a dense block using heat.

Is hash stronger than other forms of cannabis?

Hash contains very high levels of THC, usually much higher than flower. Since flower contains plant material, it is typically less potent than the extracted resin which eliminates all of the extras. THC levels vary, for example in cannabis flower there is generally a potency of 10 to 20%. In hash, THC levels can range from 20% to 60%.

What is Afghan Hash?

Afghan hash is generally mid brown in colour. It’s pretty hard, and not very malleable compared to other types of hash. However when it is heated, it can become malleable, which can be useful when you are trying to use hash in a joint or to put a small amount into a bowl to smoke. Most of the hash that you see labelled as Afghan hash is likely not from Afghanistan, but instead uses the Afghani method of making hash.

There are many sub-varieties of Afghan hash, like Kronos, Apollo, Gold Seal, and more.

What is Lebanese hash?

Lebanese hash is generally lighter in colour, more sandy than dark brown. Sometimes this lighter colour of hash is called blonde hash. Lebanese hash is also more malleable than Afghan hash, which makes it easier to put into joints and bowls. It is also easier to crumble up for use in edible recipes, particularly things like cookies or brownies.

There is also a type of hash that is called Red Lebanese. It is, as the name suggests, more red in colour compared to regular Lebanese hash. The other properties of the red are more or less the same as the blonde.

What is Moroccan hash?

Moroccan hash is going to be on the lighter side. Not as light as the blonde Lebanese, but definitely lighter than the Afghani. Similarly to the Afghan and Lebanese hash, Moroccan hash tends to have an earthy smell. It is also quite malleable, and for that reason can be good rolled up in joints or easy to break off small pieces to smoke in a bowl.

What is bubble hash?

Bubble hash is a type of hash that is made using ice, water, and repeated running of the cannabis plant matter through decreasing sizes of strainers. Bubble hash comes from the trichomes of the flower used in the process, and the ice helps to freeze the trichomes so that they can be snapped off and then sifted out. The final product of bubble hash is all the trichomes that have been sifted from the flower. It is then dried and usually ends up looking like very small balls of hash. This type of hash is usually lighter in colour. It is also possible for bubble hash to have a more distinct smell than most other types of hash. Bubble hash usually smells more like the strain of flower that was used to produce it.

How can I roll a joint with hash?

There are several different ways to roll a joint or hash spliff with hash, and the way that you choose depends on the type of hash that you are smoking.

Some hash, like Afghan, can be rolled into a long snake and then put into the centre of your joint when you are rolling it. Just set up your regular long paper with the crutch at one end and the flower or tobacco already inside, then place the hash snake carefully in the middle and roll it normally from there. When you roll a hash spliff or joint like this, you can sometimes end up with the “hash hole” that some people like to see when they smoke.

If you are using a more crumbly type of hash, like bubble or possibly Lebanese hash, then you can crumble the hash directly into the flower or tobacco that you are planning to roll into a joint and then roll it up and smoke it regularly. Be sure to disperse the hash as evenly as possible throughout the joint so that it burns more consistently.
